Patrick Henner was named the Director of Georgetown University's Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country programs on June 22, 2007, after spending eight seasons on the Hoya staff.
Most recently, the Georgetown team received six All-America nods at the 2010 Indoor Track & Field Championships. In the fall, the men's cross country team won its fifth-consecutive Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Regional and for th e second-straight year, Henner was named the Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Coach of the Year.
In July 1999, Henner arrived on the Hilltop as an assistant coach for the men's and women's track & field program and head coach for the men's cross country squad. Since Henner took over the men's cross country program, the Hoyas have seen consistent national success. At the NCAA Championships, they have three top-10 finishes, placing seventh in 2000 and 2003 and 10th in 2008. Meanwhile Georgetown has 10 top-three finishes at the BIG EAST Championship, highlighted by a conference title in 2003 and 2008 and seven runner-up honors. Regionally, the Hoyas have been an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships in each of his seasons, having placed in the top-two each year at the Mid-Atlantic Regional, including winning the last five titles. In 2005,2008 and again in 2009 Henner was named the Mid-Atlantic Region's Coach of the Year. Individually, 10 Hoyas have earned All-America honors in cross country since 1999, with Fleet Hower receiving the honor in 2005 and more recently Andrew Bumbalough receiving the honor in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
After the cross country season, Henner worked primarily with the men's distance runners, molding some of the top distance runners in the region and the nation. In 2006, the Hoyas saw the graduation of arguably the top distance runner in program history, Rod Koborsi. Koborsi left the Hilltop as an eight-time All-American, three-time BIG EAST individual champion and a school record holder in the outdoor 3,000-meter, 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs. Prior to Koborsi, Henner was influential in the development of five-time All-American Chris Lukezic, who is currently one of the top American 1,500-meter runners.
Five-time All-American and former Georgtown standout Matt DeBole and seniors Andrew Bumbalough, Alex Mason and Levi Miller have reaped the benefits of Henner's tutelage, all having success on the national and junior national levels. Bumbalough, the 2008 BIG EAST individual champion and 2008 and 2009 Mid-Atlantic Region champion who has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in each of his three seasons thus far - 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter in 2008, 1,500-meter in 2007 and 5,000-meter in 2006, also made a name for himself on the national level by qualifying for the World Junior Cross Country Championships and the World Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championship three summers ago. In addition, he was the 2006 National Junior Champion in the 5,000-meter, finishing just ahead of Miller. Miller also qualified for the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 5,000-meter, wrapping up his sophomore season which saw him place third in both the 5,000-meter at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship and the 3,000-meter at the indoor games. Mason, meanwhile, qualified for the 2006 World Junior Championships, after a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the U.S. Junior Championship.
Henner joined the Georgetown coaching staff from James Madison University where he served as head men's and women's cross country coach, as well as assistant track & field coach for the Dukes from 1990-99. His coaching achievements as head coach at JMU include being named the 1998 NCAA Southeast Region and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Cross Country Coach of the Year.
He has coached 39 All-Americans, including Pete Weilenman, Olympic Trials Finalist in the 5,000-meter; Julie Speights Henner, 1996 Olympian in the 1,500-meter and the 1993 and 1995 World University Games' Silver Medalist; Matt Holthaus, four-time All-American in the mile and 1,500-meter and 1999 World Championship Team member; and Russ Coleman, Bethany Eigel, and Jason Long, all three-time All-Americans. Henner has produced over 20 All-East performers, three Academic All-Americans and 20 CAA All-Academic.
In addition, Henner's 1998 Men's Cross Country squad won the CAA and Southeast Region Championships and placed ninth at the NCAAs, while his 1998 women's team placed third at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships. School records fell in all events that Henner coached while at JMU.
Henner graduated in 1983 from Virginia Tech with a bachelor of arts degree in secondary education and social sciences. From 1983-87, he taught seventh grade history and coached cross country and track & field at Blacksburg Middle School in Blacksburg, Va. His teams went undefeated in dual meet and AA State Cross Country competition for four years, and his girls' and boys' teams won the Cross Country State Championship crown four times (1983-87) under his direction. Henner's girls' track & field teams were two-time State Champions.
After leaving Blacksburg, Henner moved on to James Madison University, where he served as the graduate and part-time men's cross country and track & field coach from 1987-90. Henner's achievements during those three years included a top-three finish at the CAA Cross Country Championships (1987, 1988, 1989); three individual cross country champions (1987, 1988, 1989), five indoor and three outdoor school records being broken; and JMU's best finishes ever at the NCAA District Cross Country Championships (1988 and 1989).
