Head Women's Cross Country Coach / Associate Head Coach Men's and Women's Track & Field Chris Miltenberg returned to his alma mater in July 2007. Miltenberg oversees Georgetown's middle distance and distance student-athletes.
Most recently, Miltenberg's impact has been seen across all three seasons. A standout 2010-11 season for the women's middle distance and distance programs saw the Hoyas finish fourth overall at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships with Miltenberg at the helm with All-American Emily Infeld taking second in the individual race, finishing a mere 2.3 seconds behind the NCAA Champion, the smallest margin of victory in NCAA history. That season saw four Hoyas earning All-America honors during the cross country season. During the indoor season, the women's team found themselves on the podium for the women's distance medley relay (DMR) for the third-straight year at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships as the Hoyas finished seventh overall. The outdoor season was a continuation of the successes from earlier in the year as the women's DMR, this time featuring three different competitors from the team featured at the indoor championships, won the 2011 Penn Relays Championship of America. Renee Tomlin, Amanda Kimbers, Chelsea Cox and Infeld combined to win the second Penn Relays DMR in program history, the first coming in 1996. Infeld went on to record her second NCAA runner up performance of the year as she took second place in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Following the collegiate season, Infeld continued to compete, recording the top collegiate time at the USA Track & Field Championships in late June, finishing fifth overall in the race.
In 2008, the women's cross country team finished ninth at the NCAA Championship and in 2009, the women's distance medley relay set a school record in a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. That record was bested in 2010 when the DMR finished third at NCAAs. At the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships, sisters Maggie Infeld and Emily Infeld finished in the top eight in the 1,500-meter run with Georgetown being the lone school with two student-athletes entered in the event.
Miltenberg's impact with the women's program was felt immediately. The 2007 cross country season concluded with the team placing third at the BIG EAST and Mid-Atlantic championships and 29th at the NCAA's. Melissa Grelli won the BIG EAST and Mid- Atlantic Regional individual championships and placed 10th at the NCAA Championships. Grelli's 10th-place performance was the second-highest finish in Hoya history. Grelli went on to be the BIG EAST champion in the indoor 5,000-meter and place fifth at the NCAA's in that event. Additionally, Miltenberg's first year saw Elizabeth Maloy earn All-America honors with her seventh-place finish in the NCAA indoor mile. Both Maloy and Maggie Infeld reached the 1,500-meter final at the outdoor NCAA Championships. The Hoyas were one of only two teams in the nation with two athletes to reach that final. Joanna Rodgers was the BIG EAST Champion in the indoor mile and went on to break the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by 21 seconds during the outdoor campaign. In total, Miltenberg's first year back on the Hilltop produced two All-Americans, four BIG EAST individual or relay champions, six NCAA Championship qualifiers, two Olympic Trials qualifiers and 18 Georgetown all-time top 10 performances.
Miltenberg, a two-time All-American and 2003 graduate of Georgetown's Robert Emmett McDonough School of Business, returns to the Hilltop after spending the last three years on the Columbia University track & field staff. He began at Columbia in June 2004 as an assistant coach, working directly with the middle distance and distance runners. He had been promoted to associate head coach prior to his move to Georgetown. While at Columbia, Miltenberg earned his master's degree in applied physiology in 2005.
Under his leadership, the Lions' men's 4x800-meter relay squad won the Penn Relays Championship of America title, the first win by an Ivy League school in the event since 1974. In addition, Miltenberg has coached nine All-Americans, 15 individual Ivy League champions, 71 All-Ivy League selections and saw 15 school records snapped in his three years with Columbia. On the team side, the women's cross country squad won the Ivy League title in 2004 and 2005, while the men took the crown in 2004, their first championship in 25 years.
While wearing the blue and gray, Miltenberg placed fourth at the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championships in both the 3,000-meter and distance medley relay to earn his two All-America accolades. He was the 2001 BIG EAST champion in the mile, while also assisting the Hoyas to four conference team championships in his time on the Hilltop. A two-time captain of the Hoyas, Miltenberg earned three Academic All-America certificates and was the recipient of the James M. Gallagher Memorial Award in 2001 as the team's most outstanding contributor.
Chris is married to former Georgetown All-American Colleen Kelly and the couple have one daughter, Maggie.
