BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown track & field program hosted the fourth-annual Hoya Spiked Shoe Club Invitational today at the Hanley Center for Athletic Excellence located on the campus of the Georgetown Preparatory School, located in Bethesda, Md. The Hoyas posted 13 top finishes in the event with six on the men's side and seven on the women's.
Matt Howard (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) came out of nowhere in the one-section men's mile final, making his move on the bell lap with just 200 meters to go. He led a trio of Hoyas through the finish as he timed in at 4:11.04, besting teammates Dylan Sorensen (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) in second (4:12.10) and Cole Williams (San Francisco, Calif./Occidental College) in third (4:12.38).
Emma Keenan (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) added to the top spots for the Blue & Gray as she won the women's 500-meter dash with a commanding time of 1:14.44, winning the first heat and subsequently the two-section final. She led teammate Hannah Neczypor (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) through the finish line with a time of 1:16.25. In the women's 300-meter dash, Keenan took on two teammates in the first of the three-heat final. Keenan, competing in lane five, took first in her heat and thus the event with a time of 41.03. Keenan led the trio of GU runners through the finish with Mirabel Nkenke (Orange, N.J./Immaculate Conception) finishing second with a time of 41.47 while Becca DeLoache (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) followed up in third place (42.10).
The Hoyas put a trio of runners through the finish in the first heat of a two-section final for the men's 1,000-meter run. John Murray closed out the final stretch to take the win with a time of 2:29.81. Michael Lederhouse (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) finished second, timing in at 2:30.39, followed by Collin Leibold (Falls Church, Va./Gonzaga) in third (2:30.40).
All-American Chelsea Cox (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) took first in the women's 1,000-meter run, a one-heat final. Cox held on to her lead on teammate DeLoache who finished second (2:47.97) followed by Rachel Paul (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) in third (2:58.69) and Kristen Walsh (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) in fourth (2:58.99) as the final runner to break three minutes.
The women's 3,000-meter run was a very controlled race with a trio of Hoyas taking the top three spots. The trio, led by Andrea Keklak (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury/Princeton) made a lead pack early in the race and did exactly what they needed to do to cleanly win the race. Keklak won the race with a time of 10:09.98 followed by Heather Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) in second (10:10.63) and Jenna Davidner (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) in third (10:11.09).
Running in the first and fastest of four heats, Devante Washington (Lafayette, La./Lafayette) - competing in lane three and the most inside - ran 34.89, besting Delaware State's Stephen Bowe in second place (34.95). A trio of Hoyas finished in the top four with Mike Andre (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) finishing third (35.44) and Hansel Akers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) finishing fourth (36.48).
Nathaniel Gordon (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) ran in the first heat of a three-section final Edging out the competition through the final lap, Gordon timed in at 1:05.57, holding on as Bryan Pointer from Delaware State clocked in at 1:05.72. Fellow Hoya Zach Zingsheim (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic) finished third with a time of 1:06.05.
In the women's 60-meter hurdles, Taylor Doaty (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) notched a first-place performance with a time of 9.51, running in lane five. Doaty would then follow that up with a third-place finish in the women's 60-meter dash finals, timing in at 8.24, behind Nkenke in second place (8.20).
The men's 60-meter dash finals saw a six-person heat featuring two members of the Blue & Gray with Tyler Smith (Jeffersonville, Pa./Norristown) recording the win with a time of 7.01. Andre, competing in another event, finished third in the event with a time of 7.16.
In the men's 4x800-meter relay, the Georgetown foursome took the top spot with a time of 7:54.82. On the women's side, Georgetown won the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:19.88. The meet ended with one final first-place finish for the Blue & Gray as the GU foursome in the women's 4x400-meter relay took the top spot with a time of 4:01.15, toppling the field by more than 10 seconds.
In what started as a very close race with 21 runners on the start list, the men's 3,000-meter run finished with Max Darrah (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) taking second place and timing in at 8:21.35.
In the first heat of a two-section women's mile final, Joanna Stevens took over the lead with 600 meters (three laps) to go but La Salle's Meghan McGlinchey took over the lead on the bell lap, edging out Stevens for the win McGlinchey timing in at 4:54.50 and Stevens recording a time of 4:55.10. Annamarie Maag (Lake Oswego, Ore./Jesuit) rounded out the top three with a time of 4:57.30.
Richard D'Ambrosio (Collegeville, Pa./Malvern Prep) finished second in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.58m. DC International's Warren Gray set a new meet record in the event with a mark of 6.82m. He bested the previous record (6.70m) set in 2013 by Georgetown's Eghosa Aghayere (Henrietta, N.Y./Henrietta Rush Sperry).
The men's 4x400-meter saw Gordon make a move on the final lap but Delaware State held on for the win as Georgetown finished second with a time of 3:24.55 behind DSU (2:24.24).
Georgetown returns to action on Friday and Saturday, January 31-February 1 at the National Invitational Meet, hosted by Penn State University in State College, Pa.
