WASHINGTON - Five more Hoyas punched their ticket to BIG EAST championships today during the second day of the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York, N.Y. This weekend's competition saw thirteen athletes overall qualify for the postseason in their respective events.
Eghosa Aghayere (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush Henrietta Sperry) was the first of the day for Georgetown to qualify for BIG EAST championships, jumping 14.77 meters in the men's triple jump and finishing fourth overall in the field of 30.
Teammate Devante Washington (Lafayette, La./Lafayette) joined Aghayere in qualifying for the postseason three hours later in the men's 200-meter dash championship with a time of 22.65, edging out the qualifying mark by .04 seconds.
Heather Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and Kristen Walsh (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) both qualified for BIG EAST championships in the women's college 800-meter event. Martin finished with a time of 2:16.14 and Walsh was not far behind with a time of 2:16.61.
Joanna Stevens (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) got the job done in the women's 3,000-meter championship, qualifying for the postseason in a time of 9:49.33.
The last event of the meet, the women's mile championship, saw three Hoyas qualify for the BIG EAST championships. All-American Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) paced the event, finishing first overall with a time of 4:39.48. Rachel Paul (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) grabbed third place and a postseason qualifying time of 4:41.12. Andrea Keklak (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) again qualified for BIG EAST championships with a time of 4:51.03.
The Hoyas resume competition next weekend, splitting sites on Saturday, February 9 at the BU Valentine Invitational, Hoosier Hills and the Washington Husky Classic.
