WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University track & field team competed at the 2018 BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, the first of the two-day event. The championship meet, held at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York, was primarily preliminary heats on the first day but closed on a pair of finals on the track with the 5,000-meter run and the distance medley relay. Through five events scored, the GU men are in fifth place (20 points), while the women’s team is in sixth place (18) through six events scored.

The day was highlighted by a record-setting performance from All-American Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John’s School) in the men’s 5,000-meter run. He ran 13:51.23 to cruise to a more than 11-second margin of victory and set a meet and facility record. The previous record (13:52.65) was set by former Hoya Daniel Nunn in 2009.

The Blue & Gray totaled 14 points alone from the men’s 5,000m and added another five from the DMR. The women’s team received points from a fourth- and fifth-place showing in the women’s 5,000-meter run from Madeline Perez (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and Autumn Eastman (Hinesburg, Vt./Champlain Valley Union), respectively, as well as a runner-up performance from the DMR.

The Hoyas are in good position for Saturday’s finals with a slew of athletes qualifying in a range of events. Georgetown tallied 20 spots in Saturday’s finals from Friday’s prelims, including an impressive four in the men’s mile and three in the men’s 800-meter run. The women’s team boasts three sprinters who qualified for finals in multiple events.

The Blue & Gray returns to action on Saturday with the final day of the BIG EAST Championships. The women’s mile is the first final on the track and scheduled for 11 a.m. The meet will be covered live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Pat O’Keefe calling the action.
