WASHINGTON - When Emily Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) walked into the Jacksons Track Center in Nampa, Idaho today, she walked in as a nine-time All-American with one race ahead of her. She walks out as an NCAA Champion and now a 10-time All-American after winning the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:15.44 tonight at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Boise State.
"I'm still in shock," exclaimed Infeld following tonight's race. "I'm so excited and I'm really happy that everything worked out and I was able to learn from my race yesterday.
"Coach Milt and I talked about the DMR yesterday and after that we decided to focus on this race and looking forward. My strategy was to stay relaxed for most of the race and really work on the last kick through the final 80 meters of the race and I'm just so happy that it worked out."
Infeld started the race with the group on the high end of the track and tucked into fifth place following the stagger. She kept in the top half of the race through the first mile and as the pace stayed consistent, Infeld started to make her move over the last 800 meters.
Infeld stayed with the lead foursome and on bell lap, as the field kicked, Infeld was just looking for the best spot to make her move. She made an attempt on the inside as she ran against the rail, threading through the lead runner on the inside and two making an attempt high on the outside. As she slipped by, she went on the outside of the lead runner and never looked back.
Her time of 9:15.44 is a new facility record at the Jacksons Track Center, breaking the previous record by more than 14 seconds.
"It was an incredible effort by Emily," Associate Head Coach of Track & Field / Head Women's Cross Country Coach Chris Miltenberg said. "It takes a real special athlete to come back from disappointment just 24 hours prior and learn from that and do what she did tonight. She finished so well and she has made so much progress, especially with her patience and composure through a race like that."
Early in the season, Infeld mentioned in interviews that her focus would be on her kick and to finish races strong. Over the last 100 meters, the product of her hard work throughout the season was showcased.
Infeld will bring the first NCAA Indoor Championships trophy back to McDonough since the women's distance medley relay foursome of Autumn Fogg, Carron Allen, Katrina de Boer and Lisa Roder won their event in 1999. Infeld will be the first women's NCAA indoor champion in a non-relay event since 1996 when Joline Staeheli won the indoor mile at the championships.
This has been a banner year for the now 10-time All-American who led her team to the NCAA Cross Country Championship with a fourth-place individual finish and a continuous progression during the indoor season that saw her set two new school records, win three individual crowns at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships as well as a nod from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) when they named her the Mid-Atlantic Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year.
With 15 points from two events over the two-day event, the Hoyas finish tied for 16th place with Baylor at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The Hoyas will start the outdoor track & field season on March 30-31 as the program will split sites between the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., and the Stanford Relays in Palo Alto, Calif.
