London Finley Sets School Record in 400-Meter Hurdles

London Finley

April 22, 2012

WASHINGTON - In what is now London Finley's best season on the Hilltop, the senior set a new school record in the women's 400-meter hurdles on Saturday at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. A record that stood since 1996, Finley ran 57.60, the fastest collegiate-eligible time in the open event. Finley was a one in a number of impressive performances in Princeton on Saturday.

Finley's performance sets a new school record for the Blue & Gray besting Nadia McNeil's time of 58.01 set at the ECAC Championships in 1996. Her time handily qualifies her for the BIG EAST Championships and currently ranks 11th nationally according to the most recent report from the Track & Field Results and Report System (TFRRS). Finley finished third overall in the race and the first collegiate athlete to cross the finish line.

That was not all Finley did that day as she led off the first-place 4x100-meter relay squad that also consisted of Chela Green, Tenille Stoudenmire and Amanda Kimbers at anchor. The quartet timed in at 3:40.99, almost four seconds faster than the field.

Kimbers and Stoudenmire were no strangers to leading the field as the duo took first and second, respectively, in the women's 200-meter dash with times of 23.66 and 24.13. Kimbers' time ranks 37th nationally according to TFRRS. The twosome also appeared on the women's 100-meter dash list with Kimbers taking first place (11.75) and Stoudenmire placing third (11.87) - both were BE qualifying times.

Also making national ranks on Saturday was Toby Ulm who placed third in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.63, a time that ranks him 37th in the country. Hansel Akers also competed in the event, taking 17th place with a time of 54.91, both were BIG EAST qualifying times.

The men's 400-meter dash featured Kevin Wilson and Austin Perron both clocking BIG EAST qualifying times. Wilson took third with a time of 47.06 while Perron ran 48.75 for 14th place.

Biyerem Okengwu's 14.44 in the men's 110-meter hurdles was good enough for second place and secures him a spot at the BIG EAST Championships while Kadeem Hunter and Tyler Smith also punched their tickets to Tampa, Fla., for the league championships. Hunter ran 22.03 in the men's 200-meter dash for 15th place while Smith ran 10.93 in the men's 100-meter dash to take 11th.

Akers, Perron, Ulm and Wilson teamed up to win the men's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:11.33.

The Hoyas will continue action starting on Thursday at the 2012 Penn Relays Carnival in Philadelphia, Pa.
