WASHINGTON - On the first day of the 2013 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships East Preliminary, Andrew Springer qualified for the final round of the men's 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Championships, held in Eugene, Ore. Springer and a handful of other Hoyas competed at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of the North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.

In a one-heat affair with 48 men on the track, Springer finished third among the field with the top 12 automatically advancing to Eugene. Springer's time of 29:57.14 was one of six times to break 30 minutes and he was the only athlete from the BIG EAST Conference to advance from the East prelims.

Earlier in the day, All-American Chelsea Cox handily qualified for the semifinals of the women's 800-meter run. Competing in the second of six heats, Cox won her heat with a time of 2:06.43, with the top three from each heat advancing to the semis along with the next six fastest times. Andrea Keklak qualified for the semifinals on time as she finished fourth in her heat (4 of 6) with a time of 2:05.72. Cox and Keklak will compete in the semifinals on Friday, May 24 at 7 p.m.

In four heats of the men's 1,500-meter run, Bobby Peavey competed in the first along with another BIG EAST competitor in Villanova's Robert Denault. Katrina Coogan had a tough day but still managed to make it to the semifinals of the women's 1,500-meter run. In the preliminary round, Coogan, competing in heat three, was part of a tie up with several runners going down in the first 100 meters. This also happened in the previous heat and the race was stopped and re-started. Despite the fall, Coogan managed to qualify on time in her heat, finishing seventh with a time of 4:20.86. Coogan will now take Friday to rest and will return to the semifinals on Saturday, May 25 at 6:30 p.m.

Billy Ledder finished seventh in the fourth of six heats in the men's 800-meter run preliminary round. His time of 1:52.14 was not enough to qualify for the semifinals of the round.

The Hoyas will continue at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships East Prelim in Greensboro, N.C. through Saturday, May 25.
