Georgetown's Andrew Springer Qualifies for NCAA Championships in 5,000m

Andrew Springer

May 25, 2013

WASHINGTON - Georgetown's Andrew Springer capped off an excellent stint at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships East Preliminary as he added a second event to his repertoire at the NCAA Championships final site. Springer previously qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meter run on Thursday evening at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.

Springer knew he was headed to Eugene, Ore., the site of the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, already having finished third in the men's 10,000-meter run on Thursday evening and was waiting for tonight's 5,000-meter semifinal to see if he would double up at nationals as he had this entire postseason. Earlier this year Springer already won both titles at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Springer competed in the second of two heats that stayed relatively close with less than a minute separating the field and less than five seconds separating the top six. Springer stayed at the front of the pack for the entirety of the race and was one of just four who managed to split under one minute on the bell lap. He finished third in his heat with a time of 14:07.02, the 11th-fastest time of the east prelim. The top five runners from each heat in addition to the next two fastest times advanced to Eugene.

Bobby Peavey competed in the men's 1,500-meter run quarterfinals today. He ran in the first of two heats with the top five from each heat plus the next two fastest times advancing to Eugene. Peavey ran in the first heat, what would end up being the faster of the two. Peavey finished ninth in his heat with a time of 3:46.79, not enough to get to the semifinals.

The women's 1,500-meter run saw Katrina Coogan compete in the first of two heats. A time of 4:32.22 was good enough for 11th but would not advance her to Eugene.

A trio of runners competed in the women's 5,000-meter run with All-American Madeline Chambers and Samantha Nadel turning in close times despite competing in different heats. Chambers ran 16:38.23 for 24th place overall while Nadel turned in a time of 16:38.57 (25th). Kirsten Kasper also competed in the event and finished with a time of 17:23.88.

The women's 4x400-meter relay made up of Mirabel Nkenke, All-American Chelsea Cox, Deseree King and Andrea Keklak competed in third of three heats tonight, the last event on the track for the Hoyas. King ran a great leg, besting the third-stanza field with a split of 53.34, the only one to come close to her split was South Carolina. The Hoyas finished seventh in the heat with a time of 3:40.91.

Eghosa Aghayere competed in the men's triple jump and his mark of 14.69m was good enough for ninth in his flight, the first of four flights in the event.

Springer will be joined by Cox in the women's 800-meter run and Max Darrrah and Dylan Sorenson in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at the University of Oregon in Eugene on June 5-8, 2013.
