LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Georgetown University track & field team closed the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Championships late on Saturday night following lightning and rain delays throughout the night. The meet serves as the precursor to the final site of the championships at the University of Oregon. Following the three-day meet, five Hoyas punched their ticket to Eugene.

The first event of the day for the Hoyas was the men’s 1,500-meter quarterfinals where All-American Amos Bartelsmeyer (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis Country Day) has thrice made an appearance. Though 12 athletes advance to Eugene and Bartelsmeyer recorded the 12th-fastest time of the day, the format worked against the senior. With five automatic qualifiers from each heat moving forward and an additional two time qualifiers, his 12th-place finish in the faster second heat fell short of the mark as the last kick over the final 300 meters proved to be too much for the All-American.

Haley Pierce (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall School) was the lone member of the Blue & Gray competing in the women’s 5,000-meter run, a two-heat first round. She stayed with the field through the conservative opening laps and stayed among the top half as the pack thinned out with seven laps remaining. As the final two laps closed, Pierce slipped back a couple of spots to finish 17th in her heat.

The men’s 5,000-meter first round materialized into a race among the top three and the remainder of the field spread into a chase pack with one right behind the other. Michael Clevenger (Decatur, Ill./Douglas MacArthur/Notre Dame) opened the race among the top half of the pack but as the pace pushed faster late into the night, Clevenger lost a few spots, eventually finishing 19th in his heat.

Georgetown will return to action June 7-10 at the 2017 NCAA Track & Field Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon, at historic Hayward Field in Eugene. The Hoyas will send a quintet of Hoyas with two in the men’s steeplechase and one apiece in the men’s and women’s 800-meter run and the men’s 10,000-meter run. It is the fifth-straight year the men have sent a pair in the men’s steeple and the eighth-consecutive season a member of the Blue & Gray will compete in the women’s 800-meter semifinals.
