Springer Competes in Finals of 5,000m at NCAA Track & Field Championships

Andrew Springer

June 9, 2013

WASHINGTON - At historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Andrew Springer made his second appearance at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships having previously competed on Thursday evening in the men's 10,000-meter run.

The men's 5,000-meter finals started with a field of 24 but two athletes scratched prior to the start of the race and an additional two were unable to finish the race and dropped out early. The race started close with the pack of 22 but continued to thin out as leaders started to pull away.

Springer stayed consistently with the middle of the pack and had a battle with Northern Arizona's Futsum Zienasellassie, Missouri's Dan Quigley and Michigan State's Caleb Rhynard. Quigley seemed to take a quick lead in that foursome but fell off after a fast few opening laps.

Going in to the bell lap, Springer had the edge on the foursome and though they all kicked for the final lap, Zienasellassie managed to split 1:00.84 while Quigley recorded a 1:01.46, both just pulling ahead of Springer at the finish line. Springer's split of 1:02.79 gave him a final time of 14:09.32, good enough for 15th place.

Select Hoyas will continue to race through the summer while others will train for the upcoming cross country season this fall.
