Amanda Kimbers was one of four Hoyas to compete on the first day of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

WASHINGTON - The first day of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials started with plenty of drama and ended with two former Georgetown track & field All-Americans advancing to the semifinals of their event. With four races on the day, the Hoyas ran the gamut on events with current All-American Amanda Kimbers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) competing in the 100-meter dash while a trio of former athletes competed in the 400 and 800 meters. Today was the first of the 10-day event held at famed Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene.
Kimbers spent much of her Friday unsure as to whether or not her flight on Wednesday out to Eugene was worth it. Despite running an Olympic Trials A standard and setting a new school record with a time of 11.25 last weekend, Kimbers' time - as well as all other marks from the New Jersey International Meet - was called into question and Kimbers spent the afternoon in arbitration pleading her case.
Upon winning her case and gaining entrance into the trials, Kimbers was placed in the fourth of five heats with the top three plus the next six fastest times advancing. Kimbers ran 11.59, the second-fastest time of her career behind last week's PR, Her time placed eighth in her heat, not enough to advance to the semifinals. Murray State's Alexis Love, competing in heat three, ran 11.49 and was the final mark to make the semifinal pool.
Former Hoya All-American Maggie Infeld, who now competes for New York Athletic Club and still trains locally with Head Women's Cross Country Coach / Associate Head Coach for Men's and Women's Track & Field Chris Miltenberg, declared in the women's 800-meter run. Infeld competed in the first of four heats and finished third with a time of 2:03.53 to automatically qualify for Saturday's semifinal, slated for 4:30 p.m. PT / 7:30 p.m. ET.
In the first race for a Hoya on the track, former All-American and one-time assistant coach of the program Monica Hargrove competed in the fourth and final heat of the women's 400-meter dash. Hargrove, now competing for Under Armour, finished fourth in her heat with a time of 52.70, qualifying for the semifinals on time. Hargrove will run in the semifinals on Saturday, June 23 with a 5:15 p.m. PT / 8:15 p.m. ET start time.
Liam Boylan-Pett, an All-American who completed his final year of eligibility on the Hilltop, competed today in the men's 800-meter first round. Boylan-Pett, now competing with New Jersey New York Track Club, competed in the third of four heats with the top three from each heat advancing to the semifinals. Boylan-Pett ran 1:48.46 to finish sixth in his heat, falling short of the cutoff for the semifinals.
Declarations for each event are open for up to 48 hours prior to the start time and will be considered and released on a rolling basis throughout the trials. Full coverage of current and former Georgetown student-athletes at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials will be available daily on www.GUHoyas.com.
