WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's cross country team, the top-ranked team from the Mid-Atlantic region as well as the 17th-ranked squad in the country, took second at the 2017 Paul Short Run today, held in Bethlehem, Pa., and hosted by Lehigh University. The Hoyas competed in the men's gold race, an 8-kilometer affair featuring 40 teams, and tallied 167 points. Another contingent of Hoyas competed in both the men's and women's open races.

"We took another solid step today," Head Men's Cross Country Coach Brandon Bonsey said following the men's gold race. "Our depth wasn't near what we wanted but our top three ran very well. Jon ran the same time that Scott Carpenter ran last year so that is a good benchmark for him."

All-American Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John's School) took the low stick in his first race of the season, clocking 23:37 for third place. He led a trio of Hoyas among the top 30 as teammates Spencer Brown (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) and Reilly Bloomer (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) finished 19th (23:59) and 26th (24:06), respectively.

"Spencer and Reilly worked together and ran very good races," Bonsey explained. "Now we need our fourth and fifth guys to step up. They need to be where Reilly and Spencer were - if we do that, then we are a good team. We have the personnel to do that and I'm confident that we will."

A slew of younger Hoyas competed in the men's open race to gain experience with the increased mileage collegiate cross country brings. The Blue & Gray showcased its depth with a quartet of Hoyas finishing among the top 15, including freshman Rey Rivera (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge), who finished fifth overall.

"Freshman Rey Rivera ran unattached today," Bonsey explained. "For the high school national 800-meter champion to race like that in his first 8K was huge. That is incredible range and I am so excited about where he is right now."
