Rivera Named BIG EAST Men’s Track Athlete of the Week

Feb. 6, 2018

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University track & field freshman Rey Rivera (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) was named the BIG EAST Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday as announced by the league. The honor comes after Rivera ran a personal best (PB) in the first collegiate 800-meter run of his career. Rivera competed at the BU Scarlet and White Indoor Invitational over the weekend in Boston.

Rivera took ninth overall in the first collegiate iteration of his signature event, clocking 1:49.57 over the 800-meter run. His time sits atop the BIG EAST Conference list and is the 17th-fastest time in the country.

This is the first BIG EAST weekly award of Rivera’s career and the third of the season for the Blue & Gray as All-American Spencer Brown (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) claimed the men’s honor in December and sophomore Paige Hofstad (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) earned the women’s accolade in January.

Both squads will be back in action as the team splits sites this weekend, competing at the BU Valentine Invitational in Boston, as well as the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, on Feb. 9-10.
