ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Georgetown University track & field program arrived in Albuquerque on Wednesday in preparation for the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of New Mexico, on Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15. The Hoyas have qualified four individuals in three events as well as two relay foursomes.
The highlight of the first day will be the finals of the men's and women's distance medley relay. The Hoyas have had a historic season with both the men and women setting records in these relays - events that Georgetown has always been among the most elite in the country. The men's distance medley relay will begin at 9:15 p.m. MT (11:15 p.m. ET) with the women's following up at 9:30 p.m. MT (11:30 p.m. ET) on Friday night. The lineups for each DMR will be determined prior to the race but have not been released at this time.
The women's team qualified after a brilliant performance on the first day of the 2014 BIG EAST Championships when the foursome of Hannah Neczypor (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton), Emma Keenan (Gwynedd-Valley, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy), Andrea Keklak (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury/Princeton) and All-American Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy) won the DMR with a record-breaking performance of 10:55.63, a time that remains the second-fastest time in the country this collegiate season behind Stanford and set a school record, facility record at the historic Armory in New York City and a meet record. Neczypor's split matched the school record set by All-American Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) in 2012 while Coogan set a record with her anchor split, surpassing former All-American Emily Infeld's time to top the list.
The men's DMR, also setting a school record this season, did it in slightly different fashion. The men quite literally did it at the last possible moment, running their record-setting time at the BU Last Chance Meet, booking their trip to Albuquerque on the last weekend that qualifying times were being accepted. The foursome of Amos Bartelsmeyer (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis Country Day), Mike Andre (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township), Billy Ledder (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga) and Ahmed Bile (Annandale, Va./Annandale) ran the sixth-best time in the country with Ledder and Bile's splits ranking second and sixth in Georgetown history, respectively.
The first event for the Hoyas in the two-day championship meet will be on Friday, March 14 at 7:45 p.m. MT (9:45 p.m. ET) when Ledder competes in the men's 800-meter semifinals. Ledder qualified for the event at a particularly-stacked Iowa State Invitational where he finished third overall and ran the second-best time in Georgetown history. This will be Ledder's first appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Immediately following that event will be the women's 800-meter semifinals at 7:55 p.m. MT (9:55 p.m. ET) where the Hoyas have two athletes qualified for the event in Sabrina Southerland (New York, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo) and Keklak. Keklak had a breakthrough performance at the Iowa State Invitational where she finished fourth in the fastest women's 800m to be competed at that facility with the top three competitors besting the previous meet and facility records. Southerland, a freshman on the Hilltop, already owns a BIG EAST individual title in the women's 800m as she handily won the event at the conference championships within the friendly confines of the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory, practically a home meet for the frosh. This will be the first trip to the NCAA Indoor Meet for the duo.
Saturday will feature Coogan in the finals of the women's 3,000-meter run at 7:55 p.m. MT (9:55 p.m. ET). Coogan notched her qualifying time early in the season at the Penn State National Invitational. She is no stranger to the event as she finished seventh just one year ago at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
The two-day championship will go through Saturday night. The event will have a limited live broadcast on ESPN3 on both Friday and Saturday with a full broadcast of the entire event happening on tape delay on Saturday, March 22, also on ESPN3.
