WASHINGTON - Georgetown track & field standouts Andrea Keklak (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury/Princeton) and Matt Howard (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Track & Field Team (women's and men's, respectively), as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today.
All-American Keklak had a breakout indoor season that put her on the national stage as one of the best 800-meter runners in the country. Keklak is a sociology major on the Hilltop and is still competing this outdoor season as the junior will run in the 800-meter run first round at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships - East Preliminary on Thursday night. She finished fourth overall in the indoor 800m at indoor nationals.
Howard, a biology major, is in the midst of a stellar season on the Hilltop. The senior currently owns the 10th-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the country and will compete on Friday evening at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships - East Preliminary, in an attempt to advance to Eugene, Ore., for the finals site of the NCAA Championships. Howard previously competed in the men's steeplechase quarterfinals in 2012.
This is the first track & field / cross country district honor since 2011 when All-American Renee Tomlin earned the distinction. Tomlin went on to earn Capital One Academic All-America Third Team honors in the national ballot.
The Georgetown track & field team is currently in Jacksonville, Fla., for the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships - East Preliminary, being held at Hodges Stadium from Thursday, May 29 through Saturday, May 31, hosted by the University of North Florida. The Hoyas sent a record 29 student-athletes to the "Sunshine State" to compete in 13 different events over the three-day affair.
