Brian King Earns BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of the Week Honors

Brian King

Sept. 17, 2013

WASHINGTON - Senior Brian King (Sonoma, Calif./Cardinal Newman) was named the BIG EAST Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office today. This is King's first conference honor in cross country as he led the then-No. 25 (U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) Hoyas to the team title at the Navy Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14, in Annapolis, Md.

The Navy Invitational was the season opener for the Hoyas, tabbed second in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the latest polls. The Blue & Gray moved up to No. 19 nationally following this weekend's performance as released in the most recent USTFCCCA poll.

"Brian's summer of hard work has really paid off," Head Men's Distance Coach Brandon Bonsey said. "He came back to campus a better athlete and that really showed on Saturday. The plan was to go out hard for the first mile in order to make the rest of the race uncomfortable and Brian did just that. He stayed tough in the middle portion of the race and closed strong. He ran a great race and I'm extremely excited about what he and our team can accomplish this fall."

King was the top finisher for the Hoyas at the Navy Invitational where he finished second overall, leading six Hoyas in the top 10, on the unseasonably beautiful Saturday morning in Annapolis. King ran 24:09.39 over the 8,000-meter course that featured many hills and turns and was a tough route for the season opener.

King's performance bolstered the Hoyas to the team title with the top five recording a total of 26 points followed by the host Midshipmen (37), American (83), UMBC (91), Howard (183), George Washington (186), Loyola (Md.) (194), Catholic (241) and Bowie State (252).

Following the 2012 postseason, Bonsey prepared summer workouts for the team and King worked hard and reaped the benefits of his hard work last Saturday as he executed Bonsey's race plan. The team looks to peak during the postseason and is preparing for the types of races they will encounter in late October and throughout November.

"Last year we had really good endurance in the postseason," Bonsey explained. "The toughest thing we faced was when the race went out hard and quick. We are making sure that we are fully prepared for those types of races this season by taking ourselves out of our comfort zone."

The Hoyas will train for the remainder of September and both the No. 19 men and the No. 6 women will return on Saturday, Oct. 5 for the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
