WASHINGTON - Graduate student Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) was named the BIG EAST Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week following his performance at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. This is Springer's first conference honor in cross country this season and the second overall for the Hoyas as Brian King earned the honor on Sept. 17 following the season opener at the Navy Invitational.
Springer's fourth-place finish was the top performance from the BIG EAST Conference in the 47-team gold division. His performance led the then-No. 20 (U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) Hoyas to third place on a hot and humid day in Bethlehem that saw the temperature creep to the high 80s on a course that boasted no shade for the runners.
The 40th Running of the Paul Short Invitational was the second meet of the season for the Blue & Gray, who remain in the top 30 nationally along with two other BIG EAST schools (No. 17 Providence; No. 23 Villanova; No. 24 Georgetown). The Hoyas hold on to the second spot in the Mid-Atlantic Region, only behind Princeton, tabbed 10th nationally.
The men's team was led by the duo of All-American Springer and King (Sonoma, Calif./Cardinal Newman) with both athletes putting up top-10 performances. Springer finished fourth with a time of 23:52, pacing 4:49 while King finished ninth with a time of 24:12 (4:53 pace).
No. 15 Indiana (89) led the way followed by Dartmouth (106), then-No. 20 Georgetown (110), Harvard (167), Iowa State (188), La Salle (191), Yale (257), Navy (330), Utah State (292) and Penn State (406) for the top 10.
The Hoyas will rest this weekend and the No. 24 men's team will return at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis., on Saturday, Oct. 19. The women's team, who moved up to No. 5 in the national polls, will return on the same date traveling to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-National Meet.
