Eleven Hoyas Earn USTFCCCA All-Region Honors

Nov. 12, 2012

WASHINGTON - Eleven Georgetown athletes - six men and five women - were honored as All-Region athletes in cross country in Division I following this weekend's NCAA Regional Championships. Those who finished in the top 25 individually at the Regional Championships earned this honor.

The six Georgetown men to earn All-Region honors were senior Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly), junior Mark Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown), sophomore Miles Schoedler (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean View), senior Ayalew Taye (Portland, Maine/Cushing Academy), freshman Darren Fahy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon), and junior Ben Furcht (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion). Springer finished eighth in the race to lead the team, followed by Dennin, who finished ninth. Schoedler came in at 11th place, and Taye placed 13th in the race. Fahy finished 15th, while Furcht recorded a 17th-place finish. The Hoya men won the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, edging out conference opponent Villanova by one point. Georgetown was one of only eight schools to have six or more runners finish within top 25 at their respective regional championships.

The five Hoya women who were named All-Region were sophomore Madeline Chambers (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat), senior Kirsten Kasper (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), sophomore Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy), junior Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas), and senior Emily Jones (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield). Chambers, an All-American, led the team at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, finishing in fifth place. She was followed by Kasper, who placed 11th, and Coogan, who finished 13th. All-American Schneider came in at 16th place, while Jones, also an All-American, recorded an 18th-place finish. The Hoya women finished the race in second place, just two points behind Penn State with the Nittany Lions competing on their home course. Georgetown was one of 11 schools to garner five or more All-Region honors.

Both teams earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships and head back to Louisville, Ky., at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park, hosted by the University of Louisville. The meet will take place on Saturday, November 17 as the Hoyas re-visit the course that they previewed at the Pre-National Invitational, a precursor to the NCAA Championships, back in October.
