WASHINGTON - Georgetown University’s women’s track & field team opened the season at the Navy Lid Lifter, winning six events and setting one new facility record. The season opener, held at the Wesley Brown Field House in Annapolis, Maryland, served as the women’s lone indoor meet during 2017 and was an impressive performance for the Hoya squad.
“It was great to see our sprinters, hurdlers and middle distance athletes open tonight after a full fall of training,” Director of Track & Field / Cross Country Julie Culley said. “In Malika Houston’s first ever race for Georgetown, she ran 8.80 in the 60-meter hurdles, ranking fourth on the Hoyas all-time list. Jody-Ann Knight opened her season with a lifetime best, breaking the Naval Academy Field House record. It was an exciting way to kick-start the season and we look forward to resuming in January.”
Jody-Ann Knight (Bentonville, Ark./Bentonville) broke a facility record at the Wesley Brown Field House with a new personal record (PR) in the 400-meter run, 55.83, to win the event. Her time puts her among Georgetown’s top 25 all-time in the event.
Malika Houston (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington HS), competing in her first season of collegiate track & field, ran a PR in her first meet for the Blue & Gray, clocking 8.80 in the 60-meter hurdles and propelling herself to No. 4 on Georgetown’s all-time list.
The Blue & Gray tallied six event wins on Tuesday, including Knight’s 400-meter dash as well as Taylor Williams (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham/Clemson) winning the 200-meter dash, Kate Gobi (Princeton, Mass./Wachusett Regional) winning the 800-meter run, Olivia Arizin (Media, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) winning the 1,000-meter run and Autumn Eastman (Hinesburg, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) winning the 3,000-meter run to round out the individual titles. Additionally, the quartet of Meredith Rizzo (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville/Yale), Josette Norris (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly/North Carolina), Gobi and Morgan Irish (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) won the 4x800-meter relay.
The men’s team will compete at the Hoosier Open this Friday, Dec. 8, in Bloomington, Indiana. Both teams will then take a break until they resume competition on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Nittany Lion Challenge.
