Sailing Qualifies for ICSA Team Race Nationals
April 10, 2012
Captain Prosser Trophy / MAISA Team Race Championships
This past weekend the Sailing Team finished 3rd at the Captain Prosser Trophy Team Race Regatta held at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The result was good enough to qualify the team for the APS Team Race Nationals to be held in Austin, Texas, on June 3-5. Shifty, puffy conditions on each day of competition made every race extremely difficult, and the close scores between many teams demonstrated the parity present at the event.
In the first round robin, the Hoyas were 5-2 with losses to Old Dominion and St. Mary’s but wins over Cornell, NY Maritime, Navy, Washington College, and Hobart. The second round saw a similar 5-2 record with the team losing again to Old Dominion and also to Washington College but beating host St. Mary’s. Entering the final four round each team could still win the event and, most importantly, qualify for Team Race Nationals. The Blue & Grey needed one win in that round to advance to nationals and they got it with a clutch victory over Hobart. While the squad did not come away with the victory, qualifying for Nationals was the key goal.
In qualifying this year for the ICSA/APS Team Race Nationals, Georgetown will be at the event for the 11th time in 12 years, a feat unparalleled in collegiate sailing. The team is looking to repeat the Team Race National Championship victories for the Hoyas in 2001 and 2006.
Hoya Sailing will be back in action this coming weekend at the America Trophy hosted at Hobart and the MAISA Spring Open at the Naval Academy. The America Trophy is the MAISA Fleet Racing Championship for the Spring Season, and the top 8 teams at the event qualify for the ICSA Semi-Finals.
