WASHINGTON - It took a gutsy second-half comeback, but the No. 15/16 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (9-7, 5-3 BIG EAST) managed to defeat the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights (9-7, 4-4 BIG EAST), 9-7, on Saturday at Multi-Sport Field to earn a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament. The squads were playing for the fourth seed and the Hoyas came out victorious led by four goals and an assist from freshman attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City).
"Give Rutgers a ton of credit, I thought they were prepared and fought right to the end and I'm proud of the way we responded," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "We didn't play our best game today, but we rallied around each other and when it came down to crunch time we executed what we wanted to do and that's what makes me feel good about today."
The fourth-seeded Hoyas will face top-seeded Syracuse on Thursday evening in semifinal action at the Carrier Dome.
With twenty minutes remaining in the contest, Georgetown trailed by two, 7-5. This was the point that Tarzian took over, hitting a free position shot at 19:06 and sparking a 4-0 run to close out the game as well as notching a true hat trick along the way.
Tarzian's goal was followed by another at 12:36 as she took the pass from sophomore attacker Jody Cumberpatch (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and buried it in the back of the cage to tie it up.
Tarzian hit the game winner just three minutes later as a defensive play gave her a look at the goal. Junior midfielder Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) caused a turnover deep in Rutgers territory and found sophomore midfielder Meghan Farrell (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Visitation) who fed it to Tarzian for the game winner.
Junior midfielder Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) tallied a late insurance goal making the final 9-7 and keeping Georgetown's season alive.
The Scarlet Knights had the momentum in the first half, opening the game with a 3-0 run. The Blue & Gray answered just two minutes apart as both Tarzian and Thomas found the back of the cage to pull within one.
Rutgers scored again at 13:18, but the Hoyas stayed in it thanks to an unassisted goal from Thomas at 8:55 and one from senior attacker Erin Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) at 2:44 to tie it at four.
A late RU goal made it 5-4 going into the half and the Scarlet Knights continued to roll with an early tally in the second. However, junior attacker Dina Jackson (Potomac, Md./Bullis) quickly made it a one-goal game, scoring on a pass from junior defender Ashley Hunter (Fort Washington, Md./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes).
The Scarlet Knights answered once more, but that would be the end as Georgetown staged its four-goal run to take the game with a final score of 9-7.
Tarzian led all scorers with four goals and an assist, while Thomas added two for the Blue & Gray. Senior defender Kelly Barnes (St. David's, Pa./Radnor) posted six ground balls and three caused turnovers, while freshman midfielder Caroline Seats (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) managed a team-best four draw controls.
Sophomore goalkeeper Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) took the win in the cage with four saves to her credit.
Georgetown outshot Rutgers, 28-16, and held a 13-5 advantage in draw controls as well as a 28-16 advantage in shots. The Hoyas forced 19 Scarlet Knight turnovers in the contest.
Georgetown will open BIG EAST Tournament play on Thursday evening at approximately 8:15 p.m., at the Carrier Dome against top-seeded Syracuse. The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. The winner of that game will play in the championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
